Commentary on Should Gay Couples Have Benefits

I agree with Melinda Ramos' article, "Should Gay Couples Have Benefits". I think all gay people deserve the same rights as everyone else and I especially think anyone in the military deserves these same rights. Its a shame that we live in a state that constantly discriminates against gay people and takes their rights away. And the example of  Judith Chedville and Alicia Butler really shows how unfair people can be to others when they don't understand certain aspects of the person. Gay people are humans just like us, they feel just like us, and they love just like us and they deserve to be treated as equals.

Where I Stand and What I Believe

I don't know what other people's views are on how our government should be and I don't really care. I probably should, but when its filled with so much debate over which side is absolutely right about everything and which side is absolutely wrong about everything, you start to just not want to hear other people's opinions because invariability it will make someone mad and start something. Both my parents are conservatives and follow almost all of the conservative beliefs. They do have other opinions too though, for example they believe in things like gay marriage, which isn't a popular belief to most republicans. Although I was raised in a conservative household, I grew up in Austin, Tx, the most liberal part of Texas. Most of my friends were raised democratic and my best friend who I've known since 2nd grade is subscribed to very liberal beliefs. But that's all they are, beliefs. No side is more dominant no side is right or wrong. We've had many Democratic presidents and many Republican presidents, yet we're still here going strong. I was raised with a split belief of how our government should be, I'd mostly say I'm a republican like my parents, economically I agree with them, but we do disagree on somethings.

Gay rights is quite possibly the biggest issue facing the nation and it seems to be a splitting the country in half. Although it looks like gay marriage is becoming legal in more and more states quickly, it still seems like half people oppose it. You can't blame people for being against it, sure it is messed up but its how they were raised. I'm for gay rights, I believe we should all be equal in that respect and thankfully I share that opinion with my parents. Although my parents and I agree on gay rights, there's one other big issue we disagree on and that's abortion. My parents are strongly against abortion, which is very understandable. I for one am pro choice and think if a woman wants an abortion that she should be able to get one.
